Tom Hunter left all of us a legacy of celebration, music, compassion and giving to our communities. Throughout his lifetime, Tom worked with people of all ages and backgrounds to teach new ways of learning and living. There was a tremendous outpouring of support for the Hunters during this transition, and the family is deeply grateful.

TOM'S HEALTH
Tom Hunter was diagnosed on May 20, 2008 with Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease and died on June 20, 2008.
On September 2, 2008, a letter from the National Prion Disease Pathology Research Center confirmed that Tom had what's called 'sporadic CJD' (sCJD). His was an extremely rare type of sCJD that one in 4.5 million people are diagnosed with annually. We're very grateful that he did not have the inherited form, but it's critically important that a cure for all forms of CJD (caused by scrapy proteins in the brain which can take up to 40 years to manifest and kill their victims) are found. All forms of CJD are fatal.

"I've been visiting schools to sing songs for almost 30 years. I've been in a lot of classrooms, presented a lot of workshops, talked with a lot of teachers, and sat on a lot of floors with kids. If I bring reminders of what's important in education, they come from finding those moments when the heart shows up, moments that peek around the corner and need to be invited farther into the room so we can see them. Such moments might seem ordinary but they are way too important to be captured in test scores. They fill teachers (and sometimes children) to overflowing."

Dear Irene, Gwen & Aeden,
I was so glad to hear about your "Tom Hunter Day" experience--I've been wondering about how it went for 3 weeks now! I love that you sang all the way home, being creative, funny and close. I even love that you get grumpy, 'cause it makes you "normal" (and it makes me feel "normal" too)! I just want you all to know I think of you every day and send my love, too. Keep singing and I will, too.

Sherry and All~ I know lots of people who couldn't be at the various tributes are wondering how they went.I just got back from Dallas and the NAEYC conference where I took part in a very moving tribute to Tom with hundreds of other people who knew and loved him from conferences, workshops, etc. It was a very hopeful and upbeat evening and we all left believing we would indeed keep it going! We showed the amazing DVD that Jeanne Herrick made with Tom's unrecorded songs and so many beautiful photos. (This dvd is now available on Tom's website and is truly inspirational!)
Even though it was difficult,having Gwen,Aeden, Irene and Morgan there meant a great deal to all of us.We decided the tribute was hard but good,as so much of life is lately, and we wouldn't have missed it for the world. Keep singing , even when things are hard in your world too! Love, Billie

Dearest Gwen, Aiden, and Irene,
Tonight at 7:00 the Midwest Camp Folk are gathering at Barb Kinsella's home to pay tribute to Tom. The "Kinsella Bed and Breakfast" as Tom called it. Barb has prepared Tom's favorite home cooked meal while he stayed here. Her kitchen is overflowing with memories, songs, conversations; all the things Tom exemplified and shared with many of us. In her home, we were fortunate to hear the sound track of "We've Been Waiting For You" before it was published. He was so proud of that as well as a new Christmas song he had written for one of the countless Christmas Eve services he was known for. A camp reunion was always on the agenda when he was here in the Midwest and we even had a special surprise for him when Wendy Borgensen from Bellingham walked into her home. The look on his face was one of sheer disbelief. A Bellingham resident and NWTC camper here with us...unbelievable! The tribute DVD arrived on Saturday. Special thanks to the folks who helped make that possible for us. We will be watching it together this evening. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Much love, Linda Plant

On this eve of Thanksgiving, I am counting you all in my blessings- Thank you for sharing this difficult journey with me. I feel like your example of courage, strength is an amazing testament to us all on how to walk through this difficult process. I wish you peace and warm memories for your family gatherings tomorrow. I am lucky to have been someone who knew Tom though his amazing work and passion for children and I hope to pass on his message for the good of all our children. Thank you for continueing his work and sharing with us.

It was thanksgiving yesterday. I had a long drive home from seeing dearest friends and family & a lot of time to think. My friend Heidi's song about being lucky to be alive in the time of Tom Hunter came into my brain. Today, I have a *stack* of Tom Hunter DVDs -- I can't think of a better holiday gift for all the families I work with. I am also sending them to the executive directors at the CCR&Rs that I work with as thank you gifts for all they do during the year to support teachers and work for the betterment of children's lives.
As the wrapped piles grow, I am happy to know this message, this work, this teaching from the heart will be going out into the world to be enjoyed by many & to inspire even more.
BIG BIG thanks to each and every one of you that worked to make this DVD happen. I know it was no small task but a true labor of love.
